Severe Flooding in Andhra Pradesh Claims 33 Lives, Two Missing
Heavy rainfall and severe flooding over the past week in Andhra Pradesh have resulted in the tragic loss of 33 lives, with two individuals still unaccounted for. An official report released on Saturday indicated that the majority of fatalities occurred in NTR district, where 25 deaths were recorded, followed by seven in Guntur district and one in Palnadu district.
The floods have also devastated livestock, with 462 cattle—comprised of 106 large animals and 356 smaller ones—reported dead, along with the loss of 61,974 poultry. In response, authorities established 131 health camps specifically for livestock, treating approximately 14,092 animals.
Infrastructure has been significantly impacted, with seven electrical substations and two 33 KV feeders damaged by flooding; however, repairs have since been completed. Surface roads suffered extensive damage, with a total of 3,913.90 kilometers affected and breaches at 63 locations.
Agriculture has not been spared, as floods impacted crops across 181,538 hectares in 20 districts, affecting 205,194 farmers. Horticultural crops in 12 districts were damaged over 19,686 hectares, impacting an additional 30,877 farmers.
The relentless rains and floods have affected around 644,133 individuals, leading to the establishment of 230 relief camps. Additionally, medical camps have been set up for 344 pregnant women from the hardest-hit areas.
To aid in relief efforts, the government has deployed 18 teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), 23 teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and two naval teams to assist in NTR district. Six helicopters, including four from the Indian Air Force and two from the Indian Navy, have also been mobilized to drop food packets and water supplies in the flooded regions.
